    No.

Specifications

  • Is it safe to maintain the Supercap at 95% SoC (State of Charge)?
    Yes, but for optimal cycle-life 90% is preferred.
  • Do Supercapacitors release any gases that are not toxic but still need to be managed?
    No.
  • Are the modules UL listed?
    UL810A and UL1973 are pending.
  • Does the 24 VDC module provide remote monitoring?
    CANbus is available but limited to monitoring 10 modules simultaneously.
  • Can a Supercap explode during operation, normal or otherwise?
    Supercaps cannot explode and their specific design precludes dendrite growth which is the leading cause of cell short circuit failure. Thermal runaway is not possible in a hybrid Supercap.
  • What is the reliability of the Supcap module and rack?
    Our estimate for a full system is above 99.999%, with an individual module at 99.99%.
  • What certifications are pending?
    UL 810A
  • What does BMS stand for?
    Battery Management System. These are built into each module.
  • Do your rack systems meet IBC seismic requirements?
    We can provide a commercially available rack that is seismic rated.
  • Can the 24 VDC option be connected to any commercial off-the-shelf DC BUS rectifier? Does it require a specific rectifier?
    Operating voltage range is minimum 20 VDC to maximum 29 VDC. Any rectifier that can provide charge control within this voltage range is acceptable.

  • Do Supercapacitors have the need to check connection integrity?
    At the time of a scheduled cycle test, it's advisable to check connections. Supercaps do not heat up under load to any significant degree, so temperature caused loosening of the terminal bolts is not a factor.
  • Will Supercapacitors output toxic gasses when operating in a compromised condition or immediately before or after a failure?
    No, the modules won't output any toxic gasses under any circumstances.
  • Is the module the LRU? (Line Replaceable Unit)
    Yes. The module is the Line Replaceable Unit. The BMS is internal and cannot be swapped without opening up the unit. We stock these with a lead-time of approx. two weeks. We suggest you stock spares. All that said, a system with multiple modules will incur some backup degradation if one module fails, but because they are parallel connected the system will continue to operate.
  • Can a module be swapped without shutdown of the system?
    Yes. Warranty replacement period is 10 years (non-prorated).
  • What part replacement support is available?
    Within the 10 year warranty period, we will replace any defective part or the entire module at our option.
  • What training is available?
    Training is pretty simple and typically covered in the operation manual. If your organization requires it, let us know and we can accommodate you.
  • What maintenance is required for an individual Supercap module?
    There are no maintainable parts. Cycle testing should be performed occasionally (Once a year or less) to confirm functionality.
  • Are there any known failure modes?
    So far typical failures are in the BMS, not the cells. The BMS is a replaceable component. Most systems can lose a single module and not fail because they have multiple modules in parallel. We have never experienced a short circuit failure.
  • What happens to a module if it is not provided a full charge every 2 months as noted in the spec sheet?
    Slight degradation in life cycles.

Installation

  • Will Supercapacitors output toxic gasses when operating in a compromised condition or immediately before or after a failure?
    No, the modules won't output any toxic gasses under any circumstances.
  • I'm concerned about hackers disabling my modules remotely. What security do they offer?
    The simplest way to mitigate any external control concern is not to connect LAN cables to the modules. We can also provide an air-gapped solution with no remote access whatsoever. However the modules themselves do not support remote control functionality anyway, so security efforts are best spent securing the rectifier/inverter where the control decisions are made.
  • What technical support is available?
    24hr - 48hr turn-around for questions
  • What operation and maintenance manuals are available?
    These are provided with delivery.
  • What tools and test equipment is required?
    Terminal types vary. If Anderson connectors are used, no wrenches are needed. If bolt-type terminals are used, a 10mm wrench would be needed to remove cables from terminals. Testing can be done with a standard voltmeter and DC Amp meter. A laser thermometer can be useful for spotting lose connections under load.
  • What PPE is required?
    Under normal conditions with a 24 VDC module, none. There are no toxic gas emissions from Supercaps.
  • Is it okay to store Supercaps for long periods without installing them?
    Yes. Due to self-discharge of about 2% per month when in storage, they should be tested and charged approximately every 36 months.
  • Are physical or electrical inspections required?
    Whether they are in use or in storage, there are no physical or electrical inspections required.
  • Can a Supercap replace our current battery "plug-and-play" with our current DC BUS?
    Yes, they are interchangeable provide the charge controller is capable of variable settings to accommodate the Supercaps.
